~ Artist Statement ~
I am a plein air artist who is drawn to the beauty of the landscapes found in and around Western Massachusetts, the Cape and Islands. One of my inspirations was my great-uncle, Franz Alberda, a Dutch plein air painter. As a mentor, he encouraged and guided me in my early years. I have been fortunate enough to study with many local artists including Jamie Young and Jane Lund and more recently in Provincetown with Hilda Neily, Cedric and Joanette Egeli, all members of the Cape Cod School of Art, started by Charles Hawthorne in 1899 and run by Henry Hensche from 1930 until his death in 1992. Artists interested in exploring the methods of the Cape Cod School of Art will be interested in visiting the site to learn of its history and classes offered at the newly reinstituted school in Provincetown, MA, now called Cape School of Art. My work is impressionistic and my paintings evolve from color masses, with particular attention paid to how contiguous colors affect one another and how reflected light plays with our senses as we view the scene. All of my work is done in oil, with a palette knife. I find the work most satisfying, spending time in beautiful places such as the Oxbow, the Meadows, and old neighborhoods. My goal is to paint the season, the time of day, the moment.
