Simple Rules |
|
| 1. | Be Respectful and polite to everyone. |
| 2. | Be Honest. It is possible to cheat, but I assume that you are honest young adults. If you cheat, you will be cheating yourself. |
| 3. | Be
Punctual and Prepared. Tardies, according to school rules must be made up within five
(5) school days. If you do accumulate four tardies, a detention will be
assigned from the high school office. For first period, if you are not
in your seat or in the room at the bell, it is considered a tardy. You
can only be admitted to class with a pink pass from the high school office.
Bring your text, your notebook, a pencil and your geometry tools to class daily. If you come to class unprepared, you risk losing daily points. |
| 4. | Acquire a calculator for class, a TI - 83 or 84 will be valuable for your mathematics work at NHS, but one with Trig functions will suffice for Geometry. That is, a non-graphing calculator is sufficient for Geometry, but those students planning to continue through to Algebra II and pre-Calculus etc. may wish to invest in a graphing calculator now. Calculators may be used on a test or quiz, but not shared during a quiz or a test. |
| 5. | Be Attentive: electronic devices, including music devices and cell phones are not allowed in class, will be confiscated if seen or heard in class, keep them in your backpacks, please. |
| 6. |
Expect to have a homework assignment due every time we meet. And please
remember that the amount of effort you put into your homework will have a
direct impact on your grade. Homework is due at the beginning of the class
period. I will check your homework for completeness. In order to receive completion credit, your homework will need to:

Quizzes, Tests, and Final Exam
You will have assessments (quizzes and tests) during and after each chapter. You may also have periodic mini Quizzes . Mini Quizzes are graded and are provided as feedback for you. If you get 60%-80% on a mini quiz it will count 80% in the grade book. 81%-100% will count as 100%. Grades lower than 60% will recorded as the real grade. In general, quizzes will be half the weight of a chapter test. Your final exam will count 10% of your final grade.
Activities in class will be frequent, some will be graded and count towards your grade and others will be graded as feed back for you. Treat all work seriously and do your best work at all times.
If you are absent on a test or quiz day, a zero will be entered for your grade. If your absence is excused, you have the opportunity to take a make up for the missed test or quiz. This must be done in a timely fashion. A one day absence will require that you make up the work due on the day of your return. Absences of more than one day requires that you make arrangements with Mrs Barocas on the day of your return so that a time may be set aside for the make up. Failure to see Mrs. Barocas on the day of your return risks a zero for the graded assignment.
Grade Breakdown - Points will be accumulated during the course, the points will be converted to a percent for Progress Reports and Report Cards. You may always calculate you grade by your points divided by the total possible points times 100. Mini Quizzes will generally be worth 10 points each, quizzes about 50 points and tests generally about 100 points. Other assignments may be weighted differently. Homework is worth 2 points, but will be graded as 0, 1, 2, 3. A "0" if not done or mostly not done, a "1" if mostly done, a "2" if completely done, a "3" if done in a superb, neat, exemplary manner.
WhiteBook Project
Throughout the year you will be working on a project called the WhiteBook Project. The WhiteBook is a collection of all the definitions, postulates, properties, theorems, etc. that we learn in Geometry, written in your own words. The more effort you put into the WhiteBook, the better you will understand the material. In addition, because you will be allowed to use the WhiteBook on standard quizzes, the more effort you put into the WhiteBook, the better you will do on quizzes.
If you need to make an appointment to talk to me at any time for extra help or anything else, just let me know. There are also lots of opportunities for free tutoring at school including peer tutoring, and Homework Club.
Parents and students – for the best learning experience it will be helpful to form a partnership. The school will be in contact every few weeks concerning your child’s progress. If you become aware of your child’s difficulties before I do, please contact me. Please call with any concerns or questions.
Please tear off the bottom of this page, sign and return this portion to me, indicating that both parent and student have read these geometry expectations.
